NHS Benefits For Partners – Hot Topics Q & A

questionmarkQ. I am a 45 year old Consultant with 21 years service in the NHS.

I am a bit worried regarding the security of my long term girlfriend if I were to die. We dont intend to marry.

How do I ensure any benefits a wife would normally receive are given to her?

A. This is a fairly straightforward process now, with the NHS Business Authority (Pensions Agency) tidying up their rules fairly recently.

There are two forms you need – DB2 and PN1 – which you can get from the agency. You then nominate your partner on these forms (you need to have been living together for 2 years or more), which means that any death in service and pension benefits will go to her in the event of your death.
