Government Cuts, Dental Showcase & Rutherford Wilkinson Event

Well, the cuts have been announced by the Government and we await the impact they will have in 2011.

With close to 500,000 public sector jobs to go, certain areas of the country are bound to suffer and the businesses that serve/supply the public sector will suffer as well.

On the subject of costs, what I always try to do is to assess my own personal/family outgoings at the end of every year. If you don’t do this, I’d encourage you to give it a go as you might be surprised where you can reduce outgoings. Think about it, assuming you’re a higher rate taxpayer, for every £50 per month that you save, you need to earn approximately £1,000 per annum less in income.

Obviously, feel free to keep generating the same income, however you may also decide to work less and spend more time at home.

Just a thought.

BDTA Dental Showcase

I travelled to London a few weeks ago to attend the BDTA Dental Showcase at the Excel.

The main highlights were:

  • much of the talk amongst dentists was the Care Quality Commission regulations
  • I was there on the Friday and it did not appear as busy as previous years. I’m not sure what the other days were like.
  • Having said that, some stands always appeared to be busy whilst some others were eerily quiet (tip, if you’re exhibiting don’t sit on a chair looking like you’d rather be somewhere else!)
  • As covered already, there appeared to be some form of quiet competition by some of the exhibitors as to who could catch the eye the most with the brightest / most standout bag design. Alun Rees also commented on his blog that some visitors (Eastern European Dental Teams) may have just been there to collect as many freebies as possible – click the link to see the evidence!
  • Mark Oborn organised a ‘tweet up’ where those that have mainly been in contact with each other via twitter were able to meet each other at last. This was very slick as Mark had the software he uses send an SMS 15 minutes prior to each meet up (there were a few each day) Mark is a bit of an expert on using online tools to expand your business so if this is an area you’re looking at why not get in touch with him?
  • I managed to meet some other Dental specialist Financial Professionals, some of whom I’ve been aware of for years but our paths have never crossed.
  • I secured an agreement to write for a dental website – look out for my thoughts next year!

Rutherford Wilkinson Evening Event

Last Monday we hosted approximately 70 clients and professional connections at The Falcons Rugby Club in Newcastle.

Weston Wellington of Dimensional Fund Advisors delivered a fantastic presentation on how investors could approach their own investment planning and how to develop an investment philosophy.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to attend and judging by the feedback it seemed everyone picked up some valuable ideas that will help them with their own financial planning.
