Boilers Exploding and Devon Tranquility - Ray Prince
It all started 3 weeks ago.
Obviously the house had been turned upside down but that did not matter as I listened to the purring of the new boiler.
I flew back from Exeter that night and got home at approx. 9pm. I wasn't sure if we had any heating yet but I was hoping as it really was freezing. I walked in the house and it hit me, heat! How happy was I!
She asked how I was doing but I have to admit I struggled to tell her what a good time I was having. Always good to be the diplomat when you are due home a few hours later
I called home shortly after to be told by my better half that the workmen were still busy and it was so cold in the house that she had been in bed with her hat on.
I went for the fish pie with a cool glass of white. The views from the restaurant were stunning, even though there was a torrential downpour.
The boys were due in on Feb 1st to do the work. As fate would have it, I was en route to Devon that day from London to see a client. I arrived in Teignmouth at lunchtime and my client suggested we go for lunch.
Just like the buses.
And then the news was that we would need a brand new heating system, the whole job lot! And of course as luck would have it this happened at the end of January, just when the tax bill was due.
So they did.
We called in the experts to diagnose and were told what the cost might be, but they'd have to come back for another look at things.
Because 2 days later that went as well!
Or so we thought.
Eventually, the heating stopped working altogether (which is not a good idea when you live on the North East coast) but we still had hot water.
Our boiler had been making some weird noises for a few months, but recently it had been a lot louder and needless to say, more worrying.
