A Close Run Thing
I may have mentioned before that I run a bit - well gently chug actually. But nonetheless its important of course, and as I put on my trainers at 5.57pm on a Friday to have an hour over the hills, the memory of a recent run comes to mind.
As Ray and myself manage a sizeable amount of money for clients, we have to ensure we are as up to date as possible with developments etc- CPD in action if you like.
So four times a year we meet up with fellow like minded wealth managers to swap ideas and examine research on wonderful subjects such as asset allocation.
Our latest meeting was held in North Yorshire, and the night before we all met up for a bit of a social and a small sherry. Several of our group are runners, and so before we were due to meet in the bar, we decided to get a few miles in.
Now, the pub we had chosen was near Croft Racing Circuit, and the landlord assured us that if "nought were 'appening" we could actually run around the track.
This seemed to be a good idea, and so off we went.
The track was about a mile up the road, and on arriving there was no sight nor sound of cars or bikes. Ok we said, let's go, and proceeded to trot around the racing circuit.
About 5 minutes in we saw a car approaching at a heck of a speed, and we all ran on to the grass verge. As this car approached another was seen following at what seemed warp speed straight for us. The first cars window came down and a rather large gentleman inquired as to "what the ~#~#~ we were doing".
Fortunately we realised that a clever answer was not sensible! We explained that the landlord had said it would be ok, and that at 5 O'clock plus we assumed all would be well.
"Would that be Barry you spoke to?" he asked.
"Yes" we said. A knowing look came over his face, and he seemed to accept our explanation.
"Well you are lucky we have just closed, any earlier and you might have been in bother" he explained. "Cars and bikes come round the track at 100 mph plus, and I guess you guys are not that quick!"
We of course apologised for the misunderstanding, and somewhat red faced continued on our way round the track with his permission.
Of course the oher guys thought this was hilarious when we gathered in the bar later. When we told Barry though he just laughed!
Oh well, we'll be more selective next time I suppose and stay away from this type of circuit training!
